Colombia: River of Five Colors

Colombia: River of Five Colors

Caño Cristales is a Colombian river, commonly called the "River of Five Colors" or the "Liquid Rainbow," and is noted for its striking colors. The bed of the river from the end of July through November is variously colored yellow, green, blue, black, and especially red, caused by various water plants on the riverbed.

Caño Cristales is a fast-flowing river with many rapids and colourful waterfalls. The water of the river is extremely clear due to the lack of nutrients and small particles, which allows for the beautiful riverbed to be seen even in the fast-flowing waters.

The peak time to see the bright colours is between July and October. The river itself is located alongside the huge La Macarena National Park, which is a vast area home to savannas, incredible rock formations, jungles and offers bird and mammal watching, so it is recommended to combine the visit to the river with a visit to the National Park. There are regular flights from Bogota to La Macarena 3 times a week, so it is easily accessible.
